Daniel Herwitz has been at the University of Michigan since 2002. From 2002-2012 he directed the Institute for the Humanities. Before 2002 he lived and worked in the South Africa of the democratic transition, about which he has written in a number of books. His most recent publications are Cosmopolitan Aesthetics, and The Political Power of Visual Art, both published by Bloomsbury in the UK. In addition to his scholarly and essayistic writing he writes for the South African newspapers and catalogue essays on South African, Indian, and Avant-garde art. Herwitz has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Chicago.
