Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Kyle lived the first quarter century of his life in the southeastern United States. Beginning his career in art at the University of North Georgia, Kyle studied K-12 art education with a strong focus in printmaking and the book arts. Building upon this foundation, Kyle went on to pursue an MFA in book arts at the University of Alabama where he studied artists’ book production, letterpress printing, bookbinding, and hand papermaking. After studying the book arts at the University of Alabama’s MFA book arts program, Kyle conducted internships in bookbinding and conservation at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Kyle went on to work in book conservation at Emory University and continues to work in book conservation at the University of Michigan Library. In addition to working in conservation at the University of Michigan Library, Kyle has also served as the interim manager of the Library’s Book Arts Studio where he currently serves as an instructor and faculty liaison, working alongside faculty to provide course support and develop conceptually and craft rich lesson plans for in-Studio class visits.
Kyle maintains an independent artistic practice centered on the handmade book, artists’ books, and associated disciplines. Kyle's work and artistic inquiries revolve around an appreciation for the natural world; connections between material culture, natural resources, and agricultural practice; and the concepts of place as it relates to identity.
Kyle has had the opportunity to teach and lecture on the book arts at a variety of institutional and private venues. Those institutions include The Morgan Conservatory, Cleveland, Ohio | the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan | the Robert C. Williams Papermaking Museum, Atlanta, Georgia | Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan | the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Kyle has a passion for teaching others about the book arts and loves helping students learn and grow through art and art making.
Separately, Kyle has research interests in book arts education and book history. Kyle’s research has been published in an appendix to Tradition and Individuality: Bindings from the University of Michigan Greek Manuscript Collection by Julia Miller, The Legacy Press, 2021, in which he approaches the study of Greek manuscript binding traditions through hands-on, craft based, investigation. Kyle will be publishing his research, Bookbinding education within American colleges, universities, and schools devoted to craft education, in which he examines the contemporary field of bookbinding education as it exists within college, university, and craft school degree and certificate programs.
