Stéphanie Morissette is a bilingual (French, English) mid-career Canadian multimedia artist. Her desire is to challenge her practice through an advanced degree at Stamps School of Arts & Design with transdisciplinary work. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History & Studio Art from Concordia University in Montréal (Canada) and a Certificate in Film Screenwriting from UQAM University in Montréal (Canada). Over the past twenty years, her work has been presented in galleries and festivals internationally such as MUTEK, International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music, Montréal, Canada (2021); 22e Rencontres Traverse Video, Toulouse, France (2019); the International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), Hong Kong (2016); Women Make Waves Film and Video Festival, Taiwan (2011); and the 10th International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Istanbul (2007). In 2017, she received the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec (CALQ) Prize - Artwork of the Year - Eastern Townships, for her paper installation Troubled Forest. In 2018, she did a 3 months residency at the brain imaging company Imeka, which culminated with the creation of Meanders, a virtual reality artwork made in collaboration with Imeka, Sporobole art center and TOPO digital creation center. Meanders was finalist at the Montréal NUMIX Prize 2021 - digital art category.
Her research and artworks approach relationships of conflict between humans, living species and technologies, looking into the past, present and future. Specifically, it is the politics, psychology and biotechnological facets that she addresses in her art. Her goal is to pose a critical light on relationships of domination and the impact of the anthropocene era on nature. Pursuing an ecofeminist approach in a narrative form tinted with dark humor, she multiplies the points of view, avoiding an ascendant position in order to invite a more critical dialogue. Her art practice uses a diversity of mediums such as: drawing, paper, video installation, video animation, photo, virtual reality and sound. She is constantly searching to inject movement into her work, either with an evolutive aspect - serial or sequential, or with an eye on creating a journey into the physical space of the work, either with technology or speed.
