Hallowed Ground is a graphic novel that follows a young girl who ventures into the woods during cross country practice. While navigating the unfamiliar terrain, she confronts many creatures, some more dangerous than others. In order to mimic the natural textures of the woods, I used a combination of digital and traditional drawing tools; including ink, watercolor, and photoshop.
The themes of self-sabotage and personal growth are at the core of this story. Through her encounters with monsters, our protagonist must confront her fears and learn to navigate through her own self-destructive tendencies and contentious relationship with her brother. Along the way, she discovers her own strength and resilience, as well as the importance of trusting herself.
To bring this story to life, I was inspired by my fascination with the fantastical that was stimulated by the extensive time I spent outside as a kid, playing with friends and siblings. My deep appreciation for nature and family have not only influenced my work, but have shaped me into the person I am today.
