Though I’ve known Jennifer since high school, it was only after becoming her hairstylist many years later that we have become close friends. One day while cutting her hair, I finally inquired about her past experience with dating Dee Dee Ramone, founding member of seminal American punk band, the Ramones. Since I happened to be going out with Jennifer’s brother while she was involved with Dee Dee, I vaguely knew the story. From what I remember, Dee Dee swept Jennifer away from Michigan to New York City after only a couple of weeks, taking everybody by surprise--not only because he was famous, but because he was twice her age! Over the course of a hair appointment, Jennifer confessed the whole sordid tale from top to bottom. By the time she left the salon, I convinced her to let me illustrate her memoir. My 1-2-3-4 Months with Dee Dee Ramone is based upon this collaboration and one friend’s account of another’s life-changing moment.
