This was a question my parents asked me every morning while I was growing up. It served as a daily reminder to make sure I never left my house before swallowing my pill. I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at the age of six, and I have been medicated ever since.
Are You Medicated? explores the relationship I have with my ADHD and time. Created by hand, the wall of pills documents the 1,825 pills I have taken in the past 5 years. The audio component provides an opportunity for viewers to listen in on my inner dialogue as I go throughout my day on medication.
Now, whenever I ask myself, “Arica, are you medicated?” I find myself thinking, “I don’t know if I want to be.”
