Figment/Fragment: The 2023 Stamps School Senior Exhibition, on view April 15 – 29 in the Art & Architecture building, features work in a range of media by graduating Stamps BA, BFA, and Interarts Performance students at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design.

Join us for a public closing celebration on Friday, April 28 from 6 – 8 pm: time-based work will be screened from 4:30 – 5:45 pm and 6 – 7:15 pm in the Art & Architecture Auditorium (room 2104).

Undergraduate Emilia Bauer: Language and Incomprehension

Undergraduate Paulina Braverman: MESH

Clay forms winding on the walls of the studio move across the space and onto the floor. On the floor are small shelves made of clay. On the floor are many small pieces that were created as a time project. My aim was to make in clay and seek to know God more. My studio practice became a space for prayer. This project was an exploration of my faith as a Christian, investigating how I could know God more through clay.

A slide carousel projector projects MRI images of soft tissue growths in the artist’s spinal column. The projector sits upon a table full of parts from a previous project. The right was is filled with papers full of a previous project’s thinking and then overlapped by a poetry collection by the artist. On the left wall hang cassettes, some spooled with poems on paper rather than tape, slide carousels, rolls of paper, and various papers and tools, all parts of the previous project put on hold.

There are three white walls, each with two white floating shelves. The shelves are filled with ceramic objects painted with acrylic paint. One wall has a stack of colorful diet books, baby toys, snackwells cookies, a landline telephone, a newspaper, baby formula, a gossip magazine with lady Diana on the cover, a cheetah print bra with hot pink ribbon straps, tampax, makeup strewn about, red nail polish, diet sprite cans, mail, a baby bottle, sugar free jello, and low-fat granola. The second wall has a stack of pots and pans, a strainer, a gallon can of tomatoes, Jean-Naté body spray, aquafor, stacks of pill bottles, eyedrops, baby powder, nasal spray, cookies on a platter, family recipe cards, pill boxes, q-tips, a 2000’s landline phone, a glass of water, two identical electric toothbrushes, a phone book, a framed photo of two people holding hands in a wooded lane, and on the floor a pair of green slippers. The third wall has minute rice, takis, Gatorade-branded granola bars, a toothbrush facing down, an open deodorant with a hair on it, a 3-in1 dove men’s soap, a hairy razor, a goopy squeezed toothpaste with toothpaste drippings all over, a video game controller, a tv, a phone charging, a coca-cola breeze, a dab pen, a monster energy can, a bag of sour cream and cheddar ruffles, and on the floor a takeout order of chicken wings.

Undergraduate Sehrish Hussain: Impressions

There are four smaller paintings, with two on each side wall, and one large painting in the center. On each sidewall there is one light up painting containing a single forget me not flower, while the other contains a small grouping of three to four. They are painted in acrylic ink on plexiglass, and are lit up with blue LEDs. The painting in the center is much larger, and shows the image of a small family standing within a suburban backyard and looking upon the horizon. The family, a mother and two yound children, are standing knee deep in a floor of forget me nots, which are physically spilling out of the painting. There is an overall atmosphere of a liminal melancholy, supported by the overwhelmingly blue and purple color scheme.

The image shows a long, patchwork tablecloth than hangs down from the ceiling and lays over a long wooden table. The white tablecloth is embroidered with red text and long thread tendrils. Atop the table and tablecloth are place settings made of soil. Four antique-looking, dark brown chairs sit around the table. The tablecloth spills off the table onto the floor in a pile of soil.

Resting on a wooden coffee table is a book wrapped in navy blue cloth opened at the center. The left page contains a portrait zoomed in on a decaying flower with large drops of honey. There are three white stitches placed at the top and bottom of the book, acting as sutures to hold the pages together. Back rolls take up the majority of the image and honey run from out of view down, following the soft, curved lines of the back.

The corner of an altar assembled from a mirror, turned table top, faces up towards the ceiling. On top of the altar are various partially melted wax objects and a variety of different slip cast objects. Dried wax is pooled in the closest and only visible corner of the altar, evidence to the burning of the object shaped candles which has also been documented as a video and which is currently being projected back over the altar. The objects are assembled as closely as they were when the video of the burning was taken in a different location

Undergraduate Gray Snyder: To Hold a Body

How much plastic do you use? depicts a coral reef up top, made entirely out of transformed plastic, sitting on top of a pile of recycled plastics as a commentary on how much society not only uses plastic but throws it away. Plastic takes hundreds, if not thousands, of years to decompose. The average consumer has a microplastic intake of 11,000 particles annually so plastic is not only become integrated into the natural environment but is also becoming slowly integrated into our bodies. The installation is a way of saying that even living things are slowly becoming made of plastic.

December 22: Open to public 7am - 5pm; after 5pm, open to authorized MCard holders only December 23-24: Open to authorized MCard holders only December 25-January 2: Closed. January 2: Regular open/public hours and authorized MCard access resumes at 7:00 am. NOTE: Studio access for students will be removed the week of December 18. (The exception is those with studios in room 1000, which is only closed December 25-January 2). Students will need to request access to studios for the new semester when they return the week of January 8th.
